Temperament

While appropriate socialization and training is a huge part of a dog’s temperament, there is definitely also a genetic component.

Unfortunately, too many times, I have spoken to owners, and handled dogs who are neurotically anxious, pacing back and forth for hours, trembling in public, lashing out at other dogs out of fear. It breaks my heart how prevalent it is in our breed, and I strive to improve our breed as a whole by improving the rate of great dogs, continuing to offer support for those who have dogs that don’t. All my breeding dogs are socially adept, great dogs for cafés, hikes, farmers markets. They settle down next to me, watching the world go by; cars, dogs, people. They don’t bark, lunge or rush up to people and dogs in public, or rudely jump on them, nor do they tuck tail and hide.

Health

Health is beneficial for all aspects. It’s not only the lifespan, but the everyday live ability of a dog. My dogs are X-ray hips and elbows, which are graded by specialists under the ORCHED scheme to drastically minimize the chances of offspring getting Hip and/or Elbow Dysplasia.

Further DNA test with embark, which covers over 200 diseases, including breed relevant ones, namely Degenerative Myelopathy and Multi Drug Resistance 1. When new genetic diseases are discovered such as Pituitary Dwarfism and Cerebellar Hypoplasia (WSS Variant). As the White Swiss Shepherd dog is a small breed, we are prone to genetic bottleneck, where the population is too small and inbreeding becomes unavoidable, especially in an island country like Australia. To combat this genetic diversity is through DNA testing, and analyzation of pedigrees, over 14 generation is used to help select appropriate studs.
